Howard Joseph Mattes, 82, an&lt;br /&gt;
Inland Empire resident 63 years,&lt;br /&gt;
died today in a Spokane hospital,&lt;br /&gt;
where he had been confined&lt;br /&gt;
since he suffered a cerebral&lt;br /&gt;
hemorrhage Monday.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Born in Odebolt, lowa, Mr.&lt;br /&gt;
Mattes was a graduate of Northwest&lt;br /&gt;
Military Academy, Highland Park,&lt;br /&gt;
Ill, He came West in&lt;br /&gt;
1901 and in 1905 started a&lt;br /&gt;
lumber yard at Reardan.&lt;br /&gt;
Subsequently he was in the lumber&lt;br /&gt;
business at Davenport, Edwall,&lt;br /&gt;
and Harrington.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
In 1927 he moved to Spokane.&lt;br /&gt;
and since then had lived at.&lt;br /&gt;
W427 Twenty-fourth.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
He was a member of Manito.&lt;br /&gt;
Presbyterian Church, Manito&lt;br /&gt;
Masonic Lodge and the Central&lt;br /&gt;
Lions Club.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Mr. Mattes is survived by&lt;br /&gt;
his wife, Rose, at the home;&lt;br /&gt;
two daughters, Mrs. Katherine&lt;br /&gt;
Laing and Mrs. E. J, (Margaret)&lt;br /&gt;
Crosby, and two grandsons,&lt;br /&gt;
Howard and Edward Crosby,&lt;br /&gt;
all of Spokane.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The body is at Hazen &amp;amp; Jaeger&amp;#039;s.&lt;br /&gt;
