Foreword
Each year thousands of young men and women graduate from the high schools of America. For these, graduation represents achievement. The foundation stones upon which further development depends has been laid. How well the foundation has been laid will depend on how well the individual applied himself while in high school. The materials and instruction were here.
Nothing thrills me more, nor inspires my imagination to greater heights than to stand beside a train. In my own mind it is symbolical of power. Power to take an individual through enchanted lands, rich in adventure, what sights a person may see as they journey across our country. One sees traveling across our country the great "Empire Builder", symbolical of civilizations advance westward and characterizing the spirit of the pioneer.
It is the privilege each year for several young men to avail themselves of a much coveted scholarship, namely the Rhodes Scholarship, founded and financed by Cecil Rhodes. Cecil Rhodes, through his pioneering and adventuresome spirit was responsible for building up a huge colonial empire for Great Britain in Central and Southern Africa. Cecil Rhodes has been known as the great Empire Builder. A man of Vision--a dreamer of dreams—one who contributed to the welfare of mankind.
Dr. Salk through his vaccine for polio has relieved most of the tension as far as polio is concerned. Albert Einstein, the greatest mathematician the world has ever -known has given us untold aid as pertains to the power within the atom.
Certainly we have not exhausted the list, but we ask ourselves this question. What makes an individual great? The answer may be found in this statement. Greatness comes with service to mankind.
What are you going to make of your life? The world has its eyes turned upon youth to see what you will do with your days, your talents, your ambitions.
It isn't a question of fame or renown,
Nor a question of valorous deed:
But he who makes somebody happy each day,
And he who gives heed to distress,
Will find satisfaction the richest of pay—
For it’s service that measures success.
Mr. Wisdom
